The Library

Where every mind has a file, and every secret has a spine you can pull from the shelf.

The Library

The Library is one of the central physical locations at the Academy of Thinking, the sprawling boarding school where young psychonauts train their mental abilities. Unlike the vivid, surreal landscapes of the other characters' minds, the Library is a grounded, tangible space within the Academy's main building—a cluttered, dimly lit hall of towering bookshelves, scattered reading desks, and the ever-watchful presence of the Librarian.

Its primary narrative role is as Raz's information hub. Here, players can pull volumes from the shelves to learn about fellow psychonauts, uncover backstory fragments, and gather the hints needed to navigate the more challenging minds later in the game. It functions as the quiet, scholarly counterweight to the chaos of the training grounds and the emotional turbulence of the other characters' inner worlds.

Lore & Background

The Library sits within the Academy's main academic wing, a place where the institution's more cerebral traditions are preserved. Its shelves are packed with volumes on psychometry, mental architecture, and the personal histories of every student who has ever enrolled. The atmosphere is intentionally stifling—dust motes drift through shafts of amber light, pages whisper as they shift on their spines, and the Librarian's shadow stretches long across the reading tables. It is a space designed to make a young psychonaut feel both sheltered and slightly surveilled.

The books themselves are not merely decorative. Each volume tied to a fellow student contains a condensed dossier: the character's fears, their mental landscape's layout, and the emotional key needed to progress through their mind. For Raz, who arrives at the Academy with no prior knowledge of his peers, these pages are his map. The act of reading becomes a small ritual of preparation, a moment of stillness before plunging into someone else's psyche.

The Librarian, a large and stern figure, governs the space with quiet authority. She is less a villain than a gatekeeper—her disapproval is the price of curiosity, and her silence is the reward for patience. In a game full of screaming carnival rides, overgrown gardens, and zero-gravity space stations, the Library is the one place where the answer is simply to sit down, open a book, and pay attention.

In Their Own Story

The reading lamps hum in a low, almost insectine buzz. Raz flips through the third volume of the night—Lili's file, then Bessie's, now this one, a slim thing with a cracked leather cover that smells of pipe tobacco and old rain. The Librarian's footsteps click somewhere behind the stacks, a slow metronome he can't quite locate. He reads a line, stops, reads it again. The words are plain, almost boring, and that is exactly the point. No one in this building is allowed to feel clever. He closes the book, slides it back onto its shelf with a soft thud, and the Library settles around him like a held breath finally released. Outside the tall windows, the Academy's chimneys exhale thin ribbons of smoke into a sky the colour of a bruise healing.

Reader's Guide

The Library is a physical room inside the Academy of Thinking's main building, accessible early in the game and revisited throughout. It is not a character's mind; it belongs to the Academy as a shared resource.

Visually, the space is dark and warm—deep browns, amber lamplight, and the green-black of old leather bindings. Shelves tower past the ceiling, ladders lean at angles, and reading desks are buried under stacks of open volumes. The tone is hushed, slightly gothic, and faintly oppressive, a deliberate contrast to the bright, chaotic training yard outside.

Key interactions include browsing the bookshelves to pull up dossiers on other psychonauts (Max, Lili, Bessie, Judd, Clyde, Mitz). Each book you read unlocks a small lore snippet and, more importantly, a practical hint for the layout or emotional key of that character's mind. The Librarian patrols the aisles; lingering too long or pulling too many books at once draws her attention, adding a light pressure to the otherwise calm exploration.

Because the Library is a shared facility rather than a personal psyche, its puzzles are minimal—mostly navigation and reading. Its real reward is narrative: it is where the game's world-building is handed to you page by page, and where Raz's role as a curious, slightly lost outsider is most clearly felt.
