The Dormitory
Where the chaos of a hundred young minds settles into the quiet hum of a shared hallway at 2 a.m.
The Dormitory is the residential heart of Raz's Academy of Thinking and Learning, a sprawling and warmly lit building where the student psychonauts sleep, socialize, and decompress between their mind-diving missions. It functions as the game's primary hub: a safe, non-combat space where Raz can talk to classmates, collect items, and reorient himself before heading back out into the Academy's other grounds or into the minds of others.
Visually, the dormitory is a riot of lived-in color—patchwork quilts, mismatched posters, half-eaten snacks on desks, and the particular chaos of young people sharing a space. It contrasts sharply with the surreal, often hostile landscapes of the mind-spaces, grounding the player in a world that, for all its strangeness, still has a place where you can just… sit down and breathe.

Lore & Background
The dormitory was built to house the Academy's student body, and over the years it has accumulated the layered personality of a place where dozens of eccentric, emotionally volatile young people have left their mark. Lockers bear stickers from mind-diving expeditions. A bulletin board is a palimpsest of lost-and-found notices, recipe cards, and one very earnest motivational poster. The corridors smell faintly of the Academy's ever-present coffee and the particular ozone tang that seems to cling to anyone who has recently been inside another person's head.
For the students, the dormitory is more than a sleeping arrangement; it is the one place at the Academy where the hierarchy of training falls away. In the common room, a veteran psychonaut and a first-week freshman might argue over a board game, or a quiet kid might finally open up about a fear they haven't yet been ready to dive into. The building's staff keep things running, but the real governance is informal—gossipy, generous, and occasionally dramatic, exactly as you'd expect from a community of people whose entire training revolves around the inner life.
Raz, as a new arrival, is initially overwhelmed by the sheer density of personality packed into the dormitory's walls. But it is also where he first feels something close to belonging, where the Academy stops being an institution and starts being a home. That sense of a messy, warm, imperfect home base is the emotional anchor the game returns to again and again, a reminder that behind every grand psychic quest is a kid who just wants a decent meal and a place to crash.
In Their Own Story
It's past midnight, and the dormitory has that particular hush that falls only after the last board game has been abandoned and the last argument has dissolved into mutual exhaustion. Raz lies in his narrow bed, staring at the ceiling where a water stain shaped vaguely like a grinning octopus has been there since his first day. Down the hall, he can hear the muffled thump-thump-thump of someone practicing a psychic fist-bump against their own doorframe. The common room lamp is still on, casting a long amber rectangle across the linoleum, and the smell of cold coffee mingles with the green-herb scent of the plant someone left on the windowsill, its leaves drooping with the specific sadness of a neglected succulent. Raz pulls his blanket up, listens to the building creak and settle around him, and for a few minutes the weight of the day—the screaming, the falling, the other people's worst memories pressed against his temples—softens into something almost bearable. He drifts off to the sound of the island wind rattling the windowpanes, and the distant, rhythmic creak of the Academy's old clock tower, marking time for everyone who is still awake and everyone who isn't.
Reader's Guide
The Dormitory sits on the main Academy island, connected to the central courtyard by a short walkway. It is a two-story structure with a warm, saturated color palette—ochre walls, deep red carpet, and pops of teal and mustard in the furnishings. The tone is cozy, slightly cluttered, and entirely non-threatening compared to the rest of the Academy.
You enter through a front door into a small lobby, then move into the common room, a large open area with a couch, a kitchenette, a board-game table, and a bulletin board. Several NPCs are present here at various points in the game, and talking to them unlocks dialogue, hints, and occasional items. Individual student bedrooms line the hallway; you can enter some to find collectibles, read notes on desks, or trigger small interaction moments. Raz's own room is a small, personal space with his bed, a desk, and a window overlooking the island.
There are no combat encounters or major platforming puzzles inside the dormitory. Its role is restorative: the player uses it to regroup, collect items, talk to characters, and check the map before heading out. Look carefully at desks, shelves, and behind objects for hidden items and lore snippets. The environment is a deliberate contrast to the mind-spaces—grounded, warm, and human, a reminder of what the psychonauts are fighting to protect.
Did You Know?
- The dormitory is the only major location in the game that functions purely as a safe, non-combat hub, giving players a visual and tonal breather between the often intense mind-diving sequences.
- Multiple student characters have individual rooms in the dormitory, and the player can enter some of them to find small collectibles or read personal notes that add depth to each character's story.
- The dormitory's cluttered, lived-in aesthetic—mismatched furniture, scattered papers, half-finished projects—is a deliberate design choice to make the Academy feel like a real community rather than a sterile training fac
- The dormitory remains accessible to the player throughout the entire game, serving as a consistent anchor point to which Raz can return no matter how far into the story or how deep into another person's mind he has gone.
