Power-Up

A fleeting spark of extra power, tucked into the quiet corners of a mind.

Power-Up

Power-Ups are small, luminous collectible items scattered throughout the levels of the Psychonauts games. Picked up by the player character, they grant a brief, temporary enhancement to one of the character's core abilities—boosting jump height, movement speed, or attack potency for a short window. They are never required to advance the story, functioning instead as optional rewards that reward thorough exploration of each psychic landscape.

In both Psychonauts (2005) and Psychonauts 2 (2021), Power-Ups serve as a gentle incentive to investigate hidden corners, solve environmental puzzles, and take alternate routes through each zone. They are a staple of the Think Tank's collectible ecosystem, sitting alongside Psychobears, badges, and ability upgrades as part of the game's broader reward structure.

Lore & Background

Within the logic of the Think Tank, Power-Ups are best understood as small condensation points of ambient psychic energy. The Think Tank is, after all, a place where the raw material of thought and imagination is given physical form. A Power-Up is what happens when that energy pools, crystallizes, and waits to be absorbed by a sufficiently focused mind. They are not manufactured or placed there by any single authority; they simply emerge where the psychic substrate is rich and undisturbed, much like mineral deposits form in still water.

This organic origin fits the broader worldbuilding of the Psychonauts setting, where the Think Tank's architecture shifts, grows, and reorganizes based on the collective mental state of its inhabitants. A Power-Up might appear in a new location after a particularly vivid day of training, or vanish from a spot where the local psychic 'weather' has changed. They are ephemeral by nature—once absorbed, the energy disperses back into the ambient field, and a new one may or may not form elsewhere.

For the cadets and staff of the Think Tank, Power-Ups are a small daily delight. They are not trophies or currency; they are a reminder that the mind is a landscape worth exploring thoroughly, that there is always a little extra strength hiding just behind the next turn.

In Their Own Story

The corridor smelled of warm bread and distant thunder. Raz crouched low, tracing the painted line along the floor where the hallway's perspective bent just enough to hide a narrow gap. He'd been told this wing was 'decorative,' but decorative wings in the Think Tank never were. He pressed his palm flat against the wall, felt the faint hum of someone's half-finished daydream vibrating through the plaster, and squeezed through.

On the other side, a single Power-Up floated in a shaft of amber light, rotating slowly like a tiny sun. It pulsed once, twice, as if acknowledging him. He reached out, and the moment his fingers closed around it, his boots felt lighter, his arms felt longer, and for three glorious seconds he could leap over the entire reception desk without breaking stride. Then the glow faded, the weight returned, and he was just a kid in a too-big uniform again, grinning at the ceiling.

Reader's Guide

Power-Up — a temporary ability enhancer collectible used by the player character (Raz in both games). Visually, it appears as a small, brightly glowing object—often rendered as a star or crystal shape—emitting a soft radiance that makes it easy to spot against the background. It hovers or sits in a fixed position within a level.

Mechanically, collecting a Power-Up triggers a short-duration buff to one of the character's core stats: increased jump height, faster horizontal movement, or a temporary boost to attack/telekinesis range. The buff lasts for a limited number of seconds and then expires, returning the character to baseline. There is no stacking; picking up a second Power-Up while one is active simply refreshes the timer.

In the world, a Power-Up functions like a rule of physics: the Think Tank's psychic substrate occasionally concentrates into a small, absorbable charge. A focused mind (the player character) can draw that charge in, gaining a brief surplus of physical capability. It is not a permanent upgrade, not a tool, and not a weapon—it is a momentary alignment between the mind and the ambient energy of the place. Once absorbed, the local field re-equilibrates and the Power-Up is gone until the environment regenerates it elsewhere.
