The Board of Directors

Suits, secrets, and the most dangerous boardroom in the psychic world.

The Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is the shadowy, corrupt leadership that sits atop the Psychonauts organization—the very camp where young psychic kids like Raz come to train. On the surface they present as benevolent administrators, but beneath their polished suits and boardroom pleasantries they are running a web of kidnappings, forbidden psychic experiments, and power grabs that put every child in the camp in mortal danger.

They are the primary antagonistic force of the original Psychonauts story. Rather than a single villain, the Board functions as a collective of egotistical, petty, and terrifyingly powerful psychics who have turned the organization's resources into a personal empire. Stopping them requires the young Psychonauts to literally dive into each Director's mind and dismantle their delusions from the inside.

Lore & Background

The Board of Directors occupies the uppermost floors of the Psychonauts headquarters, a sleek corporate wing tucked behind the colorful dormitories and training grounds where the kids live. Each Director is a supremely powerful psychic who clawed their way to the top through a mix of raw talent, political maneuvering, and quiet cruelty. They meet in a circular chamber of mahogany and brass, trading veiled threats over crystal decanters while the camp below them buzzes with innocent summer-camp energy.

Their true agenda is a siphon: they have been kidnapping outside psychics and subjecting them to brutal experiments designed to harvest and redirect psychic energy for the Board's own enrichment. The children in the camp are, in the Directors' eyes, both a convenient labor pool and a potential source of power to be shaped—or discarded. Mr. Maligrix, the most dominant voice at the table, has built an entire illusory empire in his own mind and treats the other Directors as footnotes in his grand narrative.

What makes the Board especially insidious is that they are not an outside enemy. They are the institution itself, the names on the letterhead, the faces on the welcome posters. For a kid like Raz, discovering that the very people who signed his enrollment form are the people who want him dead turns the entire world of the camp upside down and forces the young Psychonauts to become the heroes their own organization was never going to be.

In Their Own Story

The boardroom smells of lemon polish and old ambition. Six chairs around a hexagonal table, each one slightly too large for the person sitting in it. Mr. Maligrix taps a crystal glass against his teeth and watches the others squirm. Mrs. Gallow adjusts her glasses. Mr. Muggins keeps checking his watch, though there is no clock on the wall—there is never a clock on the wall, because Maligrix decided time is a suggestion. "The little one is in the east wing," someone mutters. Maligrix smiles the way a tide smiles at a sandcastle. "Then we have until sunset to make him forget he ever existed." The glass taps again. The meeting is adjourned. Outside, a kid with a red cap is already climbing the ivy on the east tower, and the whole polished machinery of the Board is about to meet something it cannot file, cannot budget, and cannot ignore: a stubborn, grinning child who refuses to be a footnote.

Reader's Guide

Purpose: The Board of Directors exists to maintain and expand their personal psychic power by exploiting the Psychonauts organization from within. They run the camp's administration, control its resources, and use its children as both labor and experimental subjects. Their ultimate goal is to harvest psychic energy from kidnapped outsiders and consolidate it under their collective control, with Mr. Maligrix as the dominant figure.

Leadership: Mr. Maligrix is the de facto leader and the most powerful psychic on the Board. The other Directors—Mr. Muggins, Mrs. Gallow, Mr. Gallow, and others—orbit his authority, each harboring their own petty ambitions and insecurities that Maligrix exploits to keep them compliant.

Relationship to the Psychonauts: Enemy. The Board is the direct antagonist to Raz and the other young Psychonauts. They are not a rival faction; they are the corrupted heart of the very organization the kids belong to. This makes the conflict deeply personal—there is no external army to fight, only the people who were supposed to protect them.

Base of operations: The upper floors and hidden chambers of the Psychonauts headquarters, the lush forest camp where the kids train. The Board's boardroom, their private labs, and their containment cells are all embedded within the same grounds the children use for dodgeball and psychic drills.

Story beats driven by the Board: The entire main plot is structured around discovering the Board's true nature, infiltrating each Director's mind to expose their delusions, and ultimately confronting Maligrix in his own constructed reality. The Board's corruption is what forces the kids to grow up, to stop being students and start being heroes, and it is the engine behind nearly every major set-piece in the game.
